When the Rain Arrives: How to Plan Mobility Scooter Outings in the Bay Area's Wet Season
If you are new to the Bay Area, or visiting a parent who lives here, winter weather may surprise you. The rainy season generally runs from late fall into early spring, and much of the year's rain arrives in a handful of storms. Between them there are plenty of bright, mild days.
A scooter doesn't have to sit idle all winter. It just helps to plan. Here is a simple way to do it.
Step 1: Check the forecast the night before
Look at the hourly forecast, not just the daily one. Rain often comes in bands, with a dry window before or after. If the morning looks clear, move your errand or visit to the morning and be home before the clouds arrive.
Step 2: Pick a route with cover
Think about where you will be if a shower starts. Some good choices:
- Indoor destinations such as shopping centers, libraries, and museums, where you can park and go inside.
- Streets with awnings or covered walkways, so you can pause under cover.
- Short, familiar routes you already know, rather than a new neighborhood.
Whatever the plan, know where you could pull in out of the weather.
Step 3: Dress for sitting still
A scooter rider is seated and moving slowly, so you feel the damp and the chill more than a walker would. A few simple items help:
- A waterproof jacket with a hood, or a rain poncho long enough to cover your lap
- Gloves you can still steer in
- Shoes with good grip, since wet pavement and painted crosswalk lines can be slick
- Bright or reflective clothing, because rainy days are dim and drivers see less
Step 4: Protect the scooter
Electric parts and water don't mix, so treat the scooter like any other electronic device.
- Keep it under cover when parked: in a garage, hallway, or hotel room rather than outside.
- If it gets wet, dry the seat and controls with a towel when you get inside.
- Charge it indoors, in a dry spot.
- Follow the manufacturer's guidance on rain and puddles. If you aren't sure, ask us.
Step 5: Slow down and give yourself room
Wet leaves, puddles that hide cracks, and slick curb ramps all call for a gentler pace. Approach curb cuts straight on, avoid deep puddles by taking a different path, and leave extra space at crosswalks. Drivers need longer to stop in the rain, so wait until you are sure they have seen you before you cross.
Step 6: Know when to stay in
Sometimes the best plan is no plan. If the rain is heavy, the wind is strong, or you don't feel steady, it is fine to reschedule. Nobody keeps a gold star for riding through a storm. Heavy rain is a good day for a video call with the grandkids.
Step 7: Plan delivery for a dry window
If you are renting, try to schedule delivery on a day or at a time when the weather looks calm, and have a covered spot ready for the handoff. We will set the scooter up, walk you through the controls, and answer your questions before you ride. If the forecast changes, tell us and we will work with you on timing.
A note for visitors and caregivers
Many of our Bay Area customers are seniors, people recovering from surgery, and adult children booking for a parent who is visiting for the holidays. For those trips, a few days of planning goes a long way. Choose indoor-friendly destinations, keep the schedule loose, and let the weather guide the day.
