Planning a Mobility Scooter Rental Before Surgery in the Bay Area: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Planning Ahead Matters
Recovery planning tends to focus on the big items — who's driving you home, what the physical therapy schedule looks like, whether someone can stay the first few nights. Mobility around the house is easy to leave for later, and then it becomes the thing you're scrambling to solve the day you're discharged.
If you or a family member has a Bay Area surgery coming up — knee, hip, foot, or anything that limits walking for a few weeks — here's a simple order of operations for arranging a mobility scooter rental before you need it, not after.
Step 1: Talk to Your Care Team First
Before booking anything, ask your surgeon or physical therapist whether a scooter fits your recovery plan. Some procedures call for strict non-weight-bearing protocols where a scooter is genuinely useful; others benefit more from a walker or crutches for a period first. SafeCare Rental is a rental company, not a medical provider — we don't give medical advice, and we're not affiliated with any specific hospital or surgery center in San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, or elsewhere in the Bay Area. Your care team's input should come first.
Step 2: Estimate How Long You'll Actually Need It
Recovery timelines vary a lot by procedure and by person. A knee scope might mean a week or two of limited mobility; a joint replacement can mean a month or more. You don't need an exact number — a rough range is enough to start.
This matters because Bay Area pricing is tiered by length of stay: short stays run higher per day, and the rate drops the longer you rent. Renting for the length you actually expect to need, rather than guessing short and extending repeatedly, is usually the better value — and if you're wrong in either direction, there's no penalty for returning early or extending by phone.
Step 3: Measure the Home Before You Need To
While you're still mobile, walk the route the scooter will actually take — front door to bedroom, bedroom to bathroom, bedroom to kitchen or a main sitting area. Note anything under about 28 inches wide, since that's roughly the width where a standard scooter starts to struggle. Thick pile carpet and multiple steps can also limit where a scooter reaches indoors.
This is a five-minute task before surgery. It's a much harder task to do accurately once you're the one recovering. If anything looks tight, mention it when you call — we'd rather tell you honestly that a scooter isn't the right fit for a space than deliver one that sits unused in a hallway.
Step 4: Schedule Delivery Around Your Discharge, Not Your Surgery Date
The scooter doesn't need to arrive the day of surgery — it needs to be ready the day you (or your family member) walk back through the front door. If your discharge date is firm, scheduled delivery arranged even a day ahead is free anywhere in our Bay Area service area. If the discharge date is still fluid, that's fine too; call us with your best estimate and we'll stay in touch as it firms up. Same-day delivery is available when plans change quickly, though it carries a separate fee — worth knowing upfront so it isn't a surprise.
Step 5: Set Up the Space Before the Scooter Arrives
Once delivery is scheduled, spend a few minutes clearing the routes you mapped in Step 3. Move throw rugs, shift furniture out of the direct path, and pick one reliable outlet for overnight charging — a hallway or bedside outlet works well. When we arrive, we'll walk through the controls, charging, and speed settings with whoever will be using it, so there's no guessing on day one.

One Honest Note
A rental scooter is a mobility tool, not a substitute for medical guidance. If your care team recommends a walker, crutches, or a wheelchair instead for part of your recovery, that recommendation should win. We're glad to talk through what we offer, including wheelchair rentals, but the clinical call belongs to your doctor or therapist.
