Clocks Fall Back November 1: Keeping Your Mobility Scooter Outings Safe as Columbus Evenings Get Dark Early
Every fall there is one Sunday when the evening seems to vanish. This year it's November 1, when clocks in Ohio move back an hour. Overnight, a 6 PM sunset becomes a little after 5 PM, and the dark keeps arriving earlier through the rest of the month.
If you or someone you love uses a mobility scooter, whether it's your own or a short-term rental, that shift is worth planning around. Nothing about the scooter changes. What changes is how well everyone else can see you.
Start with a simple rule: be home by sunset
You don't have to give up your evenings. But a good habit for the first few weeks after the time change is to look up the day's sunset time and plan to be back at your door, hotel, or ride pickup before it. Most of us are used to leaving a lunch, appointment, or family visit at 5 or 6 PM. For a few weeks, that is suddenly after dark.
Try moving the outing earlier, not shorter. A late lunch replaces an early dinner. A morning appointment beats an afternoon one.
Make yourself easy to see
Drivers pulling out of driveways and parking lots at dusk are looking for cars, not seated riders. A few small things help:
- Wear light or bright colors, or a reflective vest or sash. They're inexpensive and easy to find.
- Use the scooter's headlight and any lights it has if your model includes them. Ask us to show you where the switch is when we set it up.
- Add reflective tape or a flag if you want extra visibility.
- Cross at corners and crosswalks, and pause so drivers can see you before you move.
Watch the ground, not just the traffic
Fall in Columbus brings wet leaves, and in some weeks, early frost. Leaves on a sidewalk can hide cracks or curb edges, and damp leaves can be slippery. At dusk, all of that is harder to see. Slow down, take curb cuts squarely, and avoid piles of leaves when there's a clear path around them.
Dress for sitting still
A scooter rider doesn't warm up the way a walker does. Cold hands on the controls and cold legs can make a short outing miserable. Layers, gloves you can still steer in, and a lap blanket go a long way. Give yourself a few extra minutes at the door to get comfortable before you set off.
Charge with the earlier dark in mind
If you're renting, ask us at delivery about the charging routine. Cold weather can shorten battery range on any battery-powered device, so charge fully overnight and plan a little more cushion than you would in summer. Getting caught with a low battery at dusk is the outing you want to avoid.
Schedule delivery for daylight
If you're bringing a scooter in for a hospital discharge, a visiting parent, or a holiday-season trip, book delivery for a daytime slot. You'll have light to learn the controls and try a few turns at your own pace before you rely on it. Scheduled delivery, setup, and pickup are free, and we walk you through everything at drop-off.
Renting for the holidays
November is a busy month for family visits, and many people only need a scooter for a few days. Renting can make more sense than buying for a short stay. SafeCare Rental serves Columbus and the surrounding suburbs, with equipment that's sanitized before every rental.
