Cheering On a Runner? A Mobility Scooter Guide to Watching the Columbus Marathon
Cheering On a Runner? A Mobility Scooter Guide to Watching the Columbus Marathon
The Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon & 1/2 Marathon returns the weekend of October 17–18, 2026, with the marathon starting at North Bank Park on Sunday morning at 7:30 AM. The course is a flat, downtown-heavy loop through German Village, Bexley, the Ohio State campus, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights before finishing back in the Arena District — which means a lot of ground for spectators to cover if you're trying to catch your runner more than once. If knee pain, a recent surgery, or just a full day on your feet makes that tough, a mobility scooter can be the difference between watching from one spot and following the whole race in comfort.
Why Spectating Is Its Own Challenge
Runners get water stops and a crowd cheering them forward. Spectators get none of that — just hours of standing on pavement, dodging road closures, and walking between viewing points that can be a mile or more apart on a course that winds through several neighborhoods. For anyone with mobility limitations, that adds up fast, especially starting before sunrise on an October morning.
Staking Out the Start at North Bank Park
North Bank Park, along the Scioto River near Genoa Park and COSI, is where the marathon begins. If you want to see your runner off, plan to arrive early — downtown streets close for the race, and parking fills up well before the 7:30 AM start. A scooter makes the early walk from wherever you park much more manageable, especially in the dark and cold of an October morning send-off.
Catching the Middle Miles
The course threads through German Village and Bexley before heading toward Ohio State, Upper Arlington, and Grandview Heights. These historic, walkable neighborhoods are popular mid-race viewing spots, but their brick sidewalks and street closures mean spectators often park farther away than they'd like and walk in. A scooter closes that gap and makes it realistic to catch your runner at two or three points along the route instead of just one.
The Arena District Finish
The race finishes back downtown in the Arena District, the same area that hosts Nationwide Arena and a wave of post-race crowds, road reopenings, and reunions. If you're meeting your runner at the finish, expect dense foot traffic and a fair amount of standing while you wait — a scooter means you can hold a good viewing spot near the finish line without exhausting yourself before your runner even crosses it.
Timing Your Rental Around Race Weekend
Because the marathon starts at 7:30 AM, arranging delivery the morning of adds a $20 off-hours fee on top of the $20 same-day fee if you haven't rented ahead — two charges that are easy to avoid with a little planning. We recommend scheduling delivery for Friday or Saturday so the scooter is charged, tested, and waiting well before your alarm goes off Sunday. Scheduled delivery, setup, and pickup are otherwise free.
What a Rental Covers
Our shortest rental is 2 days at $40/day, which comfortably covers arriving Saturday for packet pickup and spectating through the Sunday race. If you're making a longer weekend of it with a hotel stay or visiting family nearby, the rate steps down to $35/day for 3–6 days, then $25/day for 7–19 days, and $20/day for 20 days or more. There's no deposit and no contract either way.
Planning Ahead Beats Scrambling Race Morning
Marathon weekend is one of the busiest on the downtown Columbus calendar, and scooter availability tightens up as the date gets closer. If a rental would make it easier to see your runner at more than one spot along the course — or just to stand at the finish line without wearing yourself out first — it's worth booking before race week rather than the morning of.
