The Two Scooters We Rent
We currently rent two models, and the honest differences between them come down to weight capacity, range, and portability:
- Lightweight Travel Scooter — 250 lb weight limit, 12-mile range, folds down, airline-approved
- Standard Mobility Scooter — 300 lb weight limit, 15-mile range, comfortable seating, easy controls
Both max out around 4 mph, so speed isn't the deciding factor either way. The choice really comes down to how far you'll travel in a day, how much weight capacity you need, and whether portability matters for your trip.
Why Hills Change the Math
Climbing uses more battery than flat ground does — that's true of any electric scooter, not just ours. A 12-mile range on level streets in downtown Santa Clara stretches further than the same 12 miles across a hilly route in Los Gatos or Saratoga. It's not that hills make a scooter unsafe to use; it's that they eat into your range faster, so the trip you can comfortably make on a single charge is shorter than the number on the spec sheet suggests.
If most of your daily route includes real elevation change, the Standard model's extra 3 miles of range gives you more room before you need to head back and recharge.
If You're Visiting or Staying Somewhere Flatter
For a hotel stay, a trip to Santana Row, Japantown, or Valley Fair Mall, or getting around a mostly flat neighborhood, the Lightweight Travel Scooter is usually the easier pick. It folds for the trunk of a car, it's airline-approved if you're flying in, and 12 miles covers a full day of errands or sightseeing on level ground without trouble.
If You're Using It Daily at Home on Hillier Streets
For longer rentals — recovering from surgery, helping a parent get around the neighborhood, or daily errands in a hillier part of town — the Standard model's higher weight limit and longer range give you more margin. It's less about any single trip and more about not thinking twice every time you head out the door.
A Few Practical Tips for Hilly Routes
- Charge fully before heading out, especially if your route includes a climb on the way back rather than the way out.
- Plan the uphill portion for when the battery is freshest — early in your outing rather than at the end.
- Watch for curb cuts and driveway aprons on sloped sidewalks; they're not always where you'd expect on a hill.

What It Costs
Bay Area rentals start at $50/day for a short 2-day trip, dropping to $40/day for 3–6 days, $35/day for 7–19 days, and $25/day for 20 or more days. There's no deposit, and scheduled delivery and pickup are free anywhere in our service area. A same-day delivery request, where the rental starts the same day you call, adds a $20 fee.
