Going to the Ohio State Fair with Limited Mobility? Your Questions Answered
The 2026 Ohio State Fair runs July 29 through August 9 at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fairgrounds, 717 E. 17th Ave in Columbus, just off I-71 north of downtown. It's twelve days of livestock barns, exhibit halls, the midway, food vendors, and grandstand shows spread across a genuinely large fairgrounds footprint — which means a lot of ground to cover on foot.
Every summer, we get calls from families planning a fair trip around a parent, grandparent, or visitor who has trouble walking or standing for long stretches. Here are the questions that come up most.
"Isn't the fair mostly flat and easy to get around?"
The paths are flat and paved, which helps. But "flat" doesn't mean "short." Getting from the parking areas to the livestock barns, then across to the midway, and over to the Celeste Center or Cardinal Hall for a show can easily add up to a couple of miles of walking by the end of the day — especially once you factor in backtracking for food, restrooms, and photo stops. Heat is also a real factor in late July and early August, which makes standing in lines and walking between buildings more tiring than it sounds on paper.
"Can I just rent a scooter when I get there?"
You can try. The fair does offer a limited number of scooters and wheelchairs for walk-up rental on a first-come, first-served basis, but "limited" is the key word — on a busy Saturday, they can run out before noon. If having a scooter is the difference between a comfortable day and cutting your visit short, we don't recommend leaving it to chance.
Booking with SafeCare Rental ahead of time removes that uncertainty. We deliver your scooter to your home or hotel before your fair day, so it's already loaded in the car (or waiting at your hotel if you're visiting from out of town) — no walk-up counter, no waiting to see what's left.
"What if I'm only in town for one day of the fair?"
That's the most common situation, and it works fine. Our shortest rentals run 1–2 days at $40/day, which covers a single fair visit plus a travel day if needed. If your trip stretches to a long weekend, the daily rate drops to $35/day for 3–6 days. Multi-day and week-long visitors — including anyone in town for several fair days or an extended family visit — pay less per day the longer they rent, down to $20/day for stays of 20 days or more.
"Do I need to reserve a specific scooter model for a fair visit?"
Not necessarily, but it's worth mentioning if you'll be on grass near the livestock barns or navigating gravel overflow parking, since we can point you toward a model built for that terrain. Tell us your plans when you book and we'll make sure the scooter fits the day.
"What about parking and getting from the car to the gate?"
The fairgrounds offer accessible parking within the general lots — let the parking attendant know when you arrive so you're directed to the right area. The fair has also offered complimentary accessible shuttle service around the grounds in past years; check the fair's official accessibility page closer to your visit date to confirm current shuttle routes and any other accessibility details, since those can change year to year.
